Oberhausen was appointed to the train station in 1847 that took its name from Castle Oberhausen (Germany: Schloss Oberhausen). The town was formed in 1862 after an influx of coal mines and local mills. Granted city rights in 1874, Oberhausen absorbed several neighboring districts Alstad, parts of Styria and Dümpten in 1910. After becoming a city in 1901, built the city of Oberhausen Osterfeld Sterkrade and 1929. The synthetic oil plant Ruhrchemie AG ("Oberhausen-Holten" or "Sterkrade / Holten") has been a target of the bombing campaign of World War II oil and U.S. forces had arrived at the plant before April 4, 1945.
Oberhausen was largely focused on the mining and steel production until 1960. The last coal mine closed in 1992, and a large iron and steel plant Thyssen closed in 1997 (over 50,000 jobs). The zinc plant Altenberg (Germany: Altenberg zinc factory) closed in 1981, was taken by the Rhineland Industrial Museum (in English: Rhineland Industry Museum) in 1984 and opened in 1997
In 1954 the city began hosting the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, and in 1982, the Deutscher Filmpreis was a group that wrote the Oberhausen Manifesto.
