City's historic attractions are the stone bridge over the Saar (1546), the Gothic church of St. Arnual of 18 th century Saarbrücker Schloss (castle) and the old part of town, St. Johann Markt. For this reason, combined with the proximity to the French border, retains a certain French influence.
In modern German Saarbrücken literally means Saar bridges, and in fact there are a dozen bridges over the River Saar. However, the name over a bridge at this place at least 500 years. The historical name of the city is really Sarabrucca, derived from the old German word Brucca high, which became Brocken in High German (English rock or rock).
